Ezypay’s Fitness Industry Survey reveals how much gym and fitness centre owners are paying their staff per hour and per annum. This include roles like centre/ fitness managers, senior personal fitness trainers, personal fitness trainers, gym receptionists and group fitness instructor roles such as freestyle instructors, pre-choreographed instructors, yoga instructors and Pilates instructors. Statistically, a centre manager with a sole responsibility earn an average of $63,000 to $68,000 per year, proving that fitness professionals can earn big bucks too working in an industry where their roles are not considered a profession.

Over 11,300 members and 967 clubs participated in this year’s Fitness Industry Survey. This year we extended our survey beyond Australia and New Zealand, to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong, making it the biggest survey ever done by Ezypay in collaboration with iconnect360.

Centre/ Fitness Managers (sole responsibility)

Centre / Fitness Managers takes up the responsibility of managing the whole operations of the club, which includes recruiting and supervising staff, maintaining a good customer service record, getting administrative tasks done and marketing the fitness centre. They also need tertiary qualifications such as degree in sport science, health management or recreational studies and some relevant experience to be in that position.  For salary rates per annum, 21% of the respondents said they are paid $56k to $70k on average. Meanwhile, 19% of the centre/ fitness managers revealed that they were paid around $41k to $55k a year. 18% said they were paid $71k to $85k per annum, 17% said it was about $25k to 40K, 14% said it was $86k to $100k and only 11% said they were paid over $100k per year.

However for hourly salary rates, 67% of the respondents said they have been paid around $67 to $40 per hour. Surprising, 13% of the centre / fitness manager respondents said they were paid below $20 per hour. 11% were paid about $41 – $60 per hour, 8% at $61 – $80 per hour and $81 and above ranks at 2%.

Senior Fitness Trainers

From the 2014 Staff Salary Infograph, we found out senior fitness trainers earn an average of $48,000 to $53,000 every year.  On a yearly salary rate, 26% of the senior fitness trainer respondents earned about $41,000 to $50,000. 16% of them said they are earning $36,000 to $40,000 per year.  12% of the respondents are earning $56,000 to $60, 000 a year,8% are earning about $31,000 to $35,000, and 5% earn $25,000 to $30,000 a year.

Meanwhile, for hourly rates, 44% of the senior fitness trainer respondents said they are earning $21 to $30 per hour. $15 to $20 is earned by 22%, $31 to $40 is earned by 16% and both $41 – $50 and $51 to $60 are earned 6%.

Yoga Instructors

According to the 2014 Staff Salary Infograph, a yoga instructor earns an average of $49 per class or per hour. For class rates, 52% of the yoga instructors said they were paid around $40 to $39 per class. 31% of the respondents said they charge more than $60 per class, while 15% of the yoga instructors earn about $20 to $39 per class. 3% of the respondents charge below $20.
